What is a balanced diet?

Enjoy a wide variety of nutritious foods from these 5 food groups every day:

  • Plenty of vegetables, including different types and colours, and legumes/ beans
  • Fruit
  • Lean meats and poultry, fish, eggs, tofu, nuts and seeds, and legumes/beans
  • Grain (cereal) foods, mostly wholegrain and/or high cereal fibre varieties, such as breads, cereals, rice, pasta, noodles, polenta, couscous, oats, quinoa and barley
  • Milk, yoghurt, cheese and/or their alternatives

Make sure you drink plenty of water.

It is important to limit your intake of foods containing saturated fats (such as fried foods, pizza, commercial burgers, cakes, potatoes chips and other packages snack foods), added salt, added sugars and alcohol.
